Wireless Outdoor Security Camera – The Reolink Argus 3

“Why didn’t I do this sooner?” That’s the question people frequently ask not long after they install some form of security system at their home. The immediate comfort of added safety with even just one wireless outdoor security camera!

With the world going crazy and crime on the rise, more people than ever are investing in one form of security system or another. Some are starting by just keeping outside lights on which is a good first-level deterrent to intruders.

Currently, security cameras are the most sought-after home security products because they offer a way to stop an intruder in his tracks, outside! How awesome would it be if the camera would also have a motion detector spotlight that would both scare the creep and catch him on camera?

Well, the Reolink Argus 3 Wire-Free Security Camera with Motion Spotlight is just that kind of camera. Let’s take a look at the details and reliability of this Reolink product and see if it’s what you are looking for. Or click the banner below if you’re ready to get your Argus 3.

The Reolink Argus 3 Spotlight Camera

Who Is Reolink?

Most of us are familiar with Ring, Arlo, SimpliSafe, or Google Nest products, but Reolink is a  lesser-known company offering a variety of security cameras.

Reolink was started in 2009 with the goal of developing quality security cameras at affordable prices which sounds similar to the beginnings of Ring and SimpliSafe.

And now Reolink is starting to rise in popularity as their product list is growing as is their reputation. Go to Reolink’s website to take a look at all of their products.

The Reolink Argus 3

The Argus 3 is, as the number implies, the third iteration of Reolink’s Argus series cameras. With each update, these cameras keep getting better and better.

One major advancement is the addition of a motion-activated spotlight. This is a great feature! It adds another layer of security. Would an intruder want to be standing under a bright spotlight at night with a camera vividly catching everything?

Reolink Argus 3 Spotlight Camera

Nope, that’s not what a potential intruder wants! Once that light startles him, all he can do is think about getting far from there (and changing his underpants).

So, the motion detector spotlight is one great addition to the Argus cameras, and there are several other bells and whistles that most find appealing.

Just like the predecessors in the Argus line, the Argus 3 is also wireless. That seems to be a requirement for most consumers in the market for outdoor security cameras these days.

The Argus line includes rechargeable batteries, but to make things even easier, Reolink offers a solar panel that connects to the cameras so that there is a steady feed to the battery. That way there is no need to remove and recharge batteries. It’s on auto-pilot.

Reolink Solar Panel

One inconvenience with the Argus 3 could be the fact that the camera has to be taken down to be recharged. Reolink made the Argus 3 more secure from tampering and, as a result, the internal batteries cannot be removed.

The camera has to be plugged into the wall to be recharged. But frankly, I couldn’t imagine NOT wanting the solar panel which would make recharging a non-issue anyway.

All of that and more is why I believe the Reolink Argus 3 is a great wireless outdoor security camera.

Argus 3 Features

  • Full HD Clarity
  • Motion-Sensing Spotlight
  • Rechargeable Batteries, or
  • Solar Powered (with Reolink Solar Panel)
  • Color Night Vision when Spotlight is On
  • Local Storage with microSD Card
  • Programmable PIR Motion Sensor
  • Two-Way, High-Quality Audio
  • Siren
  • Streaming Live Feed

From your mobile device, from anywhere, you can turn on the siren, turn on the floodlight, view a live stream of what’s going on in the area you place your cameras, and you can even change the parameters and settings for your camera(s).

There are other cameras on the market such as the Arlo 3 Spotlight Cam (the similar names may be no mistake), or the SimCam Alloy 1S that may compete with the Argus 3, but Reolink is a progressive company rising in popularity.

Final Thoughts

We all know that a company that is less than the most recognized name is a place where often, you can get a lot more bang for your buck because once they get a little more market share (which is happening rapidly), the prices for their products will be in line with those of the other well-known companies within the industry.

If you are interested in other awesome products by Reolink, check out their website here! Scroll through the different options they offer. And for comparison’s sake, check out some of these similar products and reviews.

We try to provide you with unbiased reviews based on all of the information available. From all of our research, the Argus 3 by Reolink is a lot of camera for the money and with great customer reviews and comments. Try one of these out!

If you aren’t satisfied, return the product with no hassles, and they will even pick up the shipping charge. But I’m convinced you will love these cameras.

We’d love to hear from you as well. Please leave us a comment below. And if you purchase one of these cameras or have in the past, let us know your thoughts. 🙂

What’s a PTZ Camera?

Security cameras are a must in the world of home or business security. Perhaps while shopping around for a system to protect your property, you might ask, “What’s a PTZ camera, and how’s it better than regular ones?

The “PTZ” stands for “Pan, Tilt, Zoom.” It’s a camera that comes equipped with the ability to move around, permitting you to position your camera on the fly, rather than having to break the ladder out every time you want a different view.

PTZ cameras allow you to cover a large area that would otherwise require you to have multiple cameras to achieve. These cameras make it, so you don’t need to purchase multiple cameras or have to worry about having to select multiple locations for installation.

How do PTZ Cameras Work?

How Do PTZ Cameras Work?

PTZ cameras work through a combination of mechanics and software. The mechanics of the camera allow it to move up and down, side to side, and zoom in and out.

The software allows you to control the mechanics, but with some cameras, it allows you to set the camera to behave like a patrol. Patrol behavior means constantly looking around to protect a greater area without you having to be at the helm.

Different cameras have different abilities or limitations. For example, some PTZ cameras can only move from side to side a certain amount of degrees, while others might be able to spin a complete 360. The same types of differences can be found in the up and down motion and different magnification levels of zoom.

Why Should I Choose a PTZ Camera?

Why Buy A PTZ Camera?

There are several good reasons that you’d be better off using a PTZ camera rather than a stationary option.

There are also a few reasons why a PTZ camera may not be best for your needs.

But for starters, we will look at the reasons why using a PTZ camera may be beneficial. Here are a few of those reasons.

  • They cover a large area and are best for large yards.
  • When strategically placed, their field of view can look around corners.
  • You can zoom in closer to people or objects in real-time to gather greater details.
  • Most systems allow you to establish patrol parameters and also adjust the speed of the patrol view’s motion.
  • Because of the capabilities of a PTZ security camera, you’ll be spending less money on installation costs, or less time installing several different cameras to cover the same range.

There are pros and cons to everything. Along with the reasons why you should choose a PTZ security camera system, there might be reasons why you might not want one over a traditional stationary type.

So, here are a few of the cons,

or reasons it may not be beneficial to you:

Maybe you have a small yard that can get full coverage in one shot. In this case, a stationary model would probably work best for you. Some yards are small enough that any zoom feature might not ever be necessary either.

Or, because of how the property is situated, you might not want to open up a range that picks up on traffic areas. Depending on the alert software, false alarms can come quickly if a camera can’t distinguish between normal traffic and intruders.

What is a PTZ Camera System I Can Trust?

To answer this question, we’ve compiled information on four different companies that offer PTZ cameras, all being slightly different from the other. We’ll lay them out and see their strengths and features.

From there, you should be better equipped to determine whether or not these would be the right option for your yard or business. The four cameras that we’re going to look at are made by Annke, Netvue, Soliom, and Reolink.

So that you know, these cameras share many of the same or similar features. Because of this, features will be described once or twice, rather than repeating the information three or four times.

Final Thoughts

These outdoor security cameras are able to prevent wrongdoers from getting away with whatever they’ve done, in ways that a stationary security camera can’t.

With a stationary camera, you could get footage of someone walking into the frame, then out of the frame. Your chances of obtaining any identifying information are limited to where the perpetrator decides to walk.

The ability to record someone walking from the street to your home, then sneaking across the lawn and into a tree line to retreat, leaves you with much more potential for collecting incriminating evidence.

PTZ cameras are superior to others out there in a wide variety of ways. But, as stated earlier, they might not be practical for your purposes. Only you can determine whether or not it would be worth your while to pick one of these up.

But if these are of interest to you, and you believe that they would suit your needs, all four of these are solid options to go with. So, click the link to the product above that you want and be sure to check out some of each vendor’s other products that you may find useful.

This Is Driving Me Crazy!!!

<====== If you’ve felt like that guy

when trying to figure out

which product is best for you,

we’re here to make all of that a bit easier.

(But I do like his hair, just saying)

The reason that the following are the best outdoor security camera systems for everyone is because there is a wide range of pricing, abilities, and features in the products that are on the list- 15 in all. The list will start from the most expensive systems and work its way to the cheapest unit available.

So, here’s the question…..

“What’s right for you,” is something that has been repeated several times through this site as it relates to home security. The best way to deal with figuring out which system will serve you better is first to determine what you need and what you don’t need.

If there’s a fancy camera that catches your eye that has a ton of features that you may never need, are the extra features something that you’d be willing to pay more for? Or, would a cheaper unit with fewer features that you’d actually use, be better for your situation? Only you can answer that, and this list will help you to see what’s out there.

16 Best Outdoor Security Camera Systems

The largest thing that these cameras have in common is that they’re all outdoor cameras. Everything else is all over the map. Some are battery-operated, others wired- all kinds of different shapes and sizes.

All of the selected security cameras in this article are weather-resistant at worst, or weatherproof at best. To check out our reviews on other security equipment, check out these articles What Is The Best Indoor Security Camera for DIY?   and  What’s the Best Doorbell Camera? – 3 Top Contenders

What’s the Best Doorbell Camera? – 3 Top Contenders

SimCam AIloy 1S Outdoor Security Camera

A number of years back, the Video Doorbell craze took off! It all started with the invention of the video doorbell camera by one company and rapidly grew into a market craze as every security company wanted a piece of that pie. Some have improved on the concept, while others simply copied it and offered it for a better price. So, the big question now is “What’s the best doorbell camera?”

We will take a brief look at the short history of doorbell cameras and how they became an overnight sensation. Then we will look at the features people want in a video doorbell or doorbell camera followed by a review of the top products that meet the needs of most consumers. So, let’s dive in and see what’s the best video doorbell!

The First Known Video Doorbell

In 2013, Jamie Siminoff founded a company called Doorbot whose flagship product was a doorbell camera or video doorbell (whichever way you like to say it)

which he later renamed Ring. That same year Siminoff appeared on the reality show Shark Tank seeking $700,000 in investment funding. He was denied by investment experts.

The History of the Video DoorbellWhen Ring Was Still Doorbot

Ring continued to grow, and after the appearance on Shark Tank and the subsequent rejection, they quickly earned $5 million n new revenue. The company kept growing and gaining exposure and credibility.

In 2016 Shaquille O’Neal acquired an equity share in Ring (his intuition is 7 feet tall!!)

Shortly after that, the company raised another $200 million in investments and the rest is history…. or the future as far as the DIY home security market is concerned.  Shark Tank really missed that one!

Not All Publicity is Good Publicity

In February of 2018, Amazon bought Ring for upwards of $1 Billion! The growth hasn’t stopped since then, but it has slowed at times due to other players on the market with similar products. Another factor slowing them down a time or two has been the publicity of security breaches and the public disclosure of the fact that Ring was in bed with over 200 police agencies throughout the US, allowing them to use homeowners’ Doorbell Cameras in their investigative efforts.

This triggered a public outcry over compromised privacy and caused many to view Ring as a part of Big Brother instead of the company they were trusting to keep them safe (and private). Hopefully, all of that is over! If not, go for companies that have a better track record of not allowing any government agency to use their enterprise.

Let’s Look at 3 of the Most Popular Video Doorbells

Since the craze with video doorbells took off several years ago, many companies and products have come onto the market. Some of these products are from companies that you are likely familiar with. However, some of them are basically unknown and often have no reviews or just a few reviews on their products.

For the purposes of this review article, we will stick with the products that have a proven track record with consumers and we’ll keep an eye on the other, unknown products and review them once there is enough information available to provide you with an accurate assessment.

With the more known products, let’s see if we can answer what’s the best doorbell camera!

Here we go:

SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro

SimpliSafe Video Doorbell proSimpliSafe states that their video doorbell detects people and ignores distractions. They do this by having a two-sensor approach. One sensor identifies the heat signature of people while the other detects the form of a human. This means that you will not be alerted every time a car drives past your house or a gorilla wanders onto your porch (wait, I’m not sure if it will read a gorilla as a human form or not. If not, it may miss my uncle Burt!)

SimpliSafe’s Video Doorbell Pro works well integrated with any SimpliSafe security system, or as a standalone product. Two requirements to note: 1) Needs to be wired into an existing doorbell setup, and 2) requires WiFi.

SimpliSafe is known for being user-friendly and for being one of the easiest DIY home security systems. Installation is easy. Here are some key features:

  • Infrared Night Vision
  • Great app that’s friendly with both iOS and Android
  • Two-way Audio
  • 160º Field of View
  • 1080p HD Video
  • Motion Alerts
  • Door Chime
  • HDR Imaging

These doorbells are sleek and look great, but if a person would like a different color, there are faceplates that are available in three colors: cloud, jade, and obsidian (or white, light green, and black). When connected with a SimpliSafe security system, the Video Doorbell Pro and every other camera on the system starts recording the moment any sensor is triggered.

SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Covers

The downsides are:

  • Capturing recording requires a monthly subscription, although relatively inexpensive
  • Uses existing doorbell wiring, no reviews wireless options
  • Doesn’t support voice commands (Like Alexa or Google Assistant) or IFTTT

Overall this is a great product, especially if you are planning on acquiring or already have a SimpliSafe security system.

Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus

Ring Video Doorbell 3 PlusRing has several video doorbells! In fact, they also have multiple generations for at least one of their lines of doorbell cameras. One item they offer is a peephole camera. Basically, their video doorbells all offer the same thing with improved features such as better motion sensing as the newer versions roll out.

For the purposes of this article, we’ll look at their latest product, the Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus. Ring is also a user-friendly company with DIY products that promise quick and simple installation. With this latest incarnation, they’ve made available a pre-roll video capture feature so that you can go back a few seconds before the camera was triggered. Here are some of the features:

  • Infrared Night Vision
  • 1080p HD Video
  • 160º Field of View
  • User-friendly App
  • Wired or Battery Powered
  • NEW FEATURE: Removable Battery Pack
  • Pre-roll video capture
  • Two-way audio with noise cancellation
  • Supports Amazon Alexa and IFTTT

These doorbell cameras are also sleek and stylish! In fact, the new third-generation plus series is slightly smaller than the other ring video camera predecessors.

There is really only one complaint that seems to have any merit: To view any recorded video or picture, a person must subscribe to the Ring Protect Plan which is currently $3/mo per device or $10/mo per household for accessing up to 60 days worth of footage. Not bad, but it is one more monthly expense to deal with. But the Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus is a true DIY video doorbell.

Nest Hello

The Nest Hello Video DoorbellThis product would “wow” you if you were to visit a friend who had it already installed and who also has a Google Smart Home vibe going on. Since Nest is owned
by Google, it should come as no reviews surprise that the Nest Hello works well with all of Google’s and Nest’s smart home equipment and features. If that’s you, this is probably the video doorbell for you.

Although a great product, there are a few things to consider if you are in the market for the best camera doorbell or a wireless doorbell camera system. There is no reviews wireless option, and it is a bit tedious to install, usually requiring professional installation which adds considerably to the price.

If you don’t already have a doorbell chime, you will need to purchase one for this video doorbell to work. To view the video history you will need a monthly subscription, although I’ve seen it inconsistently reported that there are three free hours of backup for images. The added costs make this one of the most pricey doorbell cameras on the market.

But being called the smartest video doorbell around, it’s worth a look if it fits your budget. Here are some key features:

  • Advanced App with great features and easy to use
  • Facial Recognition (requires an additional storage fee)
  • 2-Way Audio
  • Works with iOS, Android and Desktops
  • Geofencing and Scheduling options
  • Motion and Sound detection
  • Works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant
  • 160º Field of View
  • Sleeker design to fit on more doorframes

So, this is a great product! There’s no way around that fact. Nest Hello looks great, performs well, and has a few features not found in most other video doorbells.

If you’re on a budget or need a DIY option, try the Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus or the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro. Otherwise, the Nest Hello is probably the most advanced doorbell camera system on the market today.

Final Thoughts

We just looked at the evolution of the video doorbell market since its quick rise just a few years ago kicking off with the Ring Video Doorbell. Since then, with a plethora of doorbell cameras on the market offering diverse options and price points, it could make a person’s head spin trying to decide which products are worth their consideration.

To help you in the decision-making process, we’ve ventured out in true SecurtyUnveiled fashion to show you the three top contenders for the best video doorbell. Each of the three, SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro, Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus, and Nest Hello, have slightly different features.

So, what’s the best doorbell camera? It really depends on your needs and budget. You can’t go wrong with any of these. But overall, and if budget and ease of installation aren’t important points, Nest Hello would sit at our top spot as the best camera doorbell.

Please leave us a comment below with any insights, opinions, or experience with any of these or other Video Doorbells. Thanks for stopping by!

Best Home Security Systems – You May Be Surprised!

For some, there may just be that gut feeling that something should be done soon to secure their home or family before a break-in or worse happens. For others, a break-in has already happened and it’s put them on red alert that a plan to keep their family and belongings secure has to be put in place. So, what are the best home security systems? It may surprise you what has been formulated over the years as the best methods for keeping your home safe.

Sure, a solid security system sounds great, but what if a person can’t afford that during these times? Or what if they have a system but still feel like more security measures are necessary to feel the level of security their family needs? Wouldn’t it be great to just chill with the family at night and not have all of those concerns in the back of our minds?

A family Safe At Home

Well, there are several tips we’ve learned along the way that are brilliant deterrents to intruders with eyes on your home. And those creeps ARE out there! But if you follow these tips, you can have peace of mind as you enjoy your family or your solitude.

We are about to look at six tips to keep your family and belongings safe with or without a security system or to help a burglar fund his hobbies and buy that new boat they are eyeing, whichever way you choose to roll.  These tips fall into that, “ahhh, I should’ve thought of that” category and are easy to follow. And remember, we are here to help if you have questions.

Quickly before we dive into these easy to implement tips,

let’s look at the mindset of most intruders….

Burglary For Dummies

Home Security for DummiesWith extremely rare exceptions, burglars follow some basic guidelines. They do so for their own protection. Let’s help them to not be caught trying to get into our homes!

===> Their first rule is, “Do the Research”. This means they need to watch YOU, and YOUR house, and observe YOUR habits until they feel comfortable with whatever plan they’ve devised to launch an attack. Sure, not all of them do that. Some just go down the street with a crowbar. But the tips below are effective regardless of the sophistication of the criminal. If what we propose will deter a sophisticated criminal, it will deter an amateur even more easily.

===> Their second rule is, “Get in and out as fast as possible”. They aren’t wanting to hang out until a swat team shows up. They want a quick payday. They’ve studied the best way in and out of your home with, hopefully, no detection. They know which room is best to hit, where people keep keys, how to guess an alarm code (if there is one), and how to accomplish their evil deeds with even close neighbors not seeing or hearing them or knowing they are there.

There are a ton of other rules, but they are contained within these two as we are about to see.

But there are ways for keeping them from targeting you in the first place, and for disappointing their payday plans if they do happen to make it into your home and take some of your stuff. Hmmm? So, what do we set them up to take? Remember, they are there for a quick hit-and-run operation. They aren’t going to spend too much time evaluating the value of an item or looking it up on Amazon. They know the statistics on where to go, what to look for, how to best secure it in their bag, and run stealthily as quickly as possible from your home.

The Escaping Burglar

Tips To Help Your Intruders Buy Their New Boat

So, what will help an intruder decide your home is a target in the first place? Answering that question, we start with the first set of tips.

Tip #1

Make sure it is always dark outside your house at night!

Or, if you choose to not help them buy that big boat……

…….. Leave lights on the outside of your home at night! It sounds overly simple, doesn’t it? But research (including interviews with former criminals) has shown convincingly that most criminals attempting any type of break-in at night will avoid a home with lights on outside. I’m sure this takes little explanation, but I’ll give a couple of points taken from those who’ve done their dirty deeds at night.

So, the potential intruder parks in a nearby parking lot. In his (or her, but since most of these losers are men, we’ll just go with the male pronouns for this article) stealthy manner he makes his way through the backside of a subdivision and ends up undetected as he inspects a convenient cul-de-sac where he will be conducting his business.

He notices that 5 of the houses are dark, at least in a few key entry points, but one is lit up enough that he could easily be seen by neighbors or passersby. He has been scouting/casing this cul-de-sac for a couple of weeks, and at certain times all of the houses were dark. But tonight, the house he had been most interested in isn’t dark at all, because the owners read this article earlier today. But it’s a no-brainer for Mr. Loserville. The home he intended to invade is off the shortlist.

A Safely Lit Up Home

It’s really that simple. It costs much less to run low wattage outside lights at night than people normally think. Especially with the LED lights available today. And it’s far cheaper than replacing stolen goods or dealing with an insurance increase. And the worst part is some of what would be taken is irreplaceable like some family heirloom piece of jewelry or rare collectible.

And even worse than that, even with the best insurance available, your family’s security and peace-of-mind has been taken. You can’t buy that. But chances are that a little bit of outside light will keep any of that from happening.

Check these reviews on outside LED lights and other outdoor security lights.

Tip #2

Leave a key in a predictable place, like under a doormat, or under a plant or in a fake rock. Or,

Go Away Front Door Mat
Do not look under mat, there is no house key there!

to foil his plans, don’t have a key in those places. If you need to leave a key outside for some reason, secure a spot with a combination lock that can’t be cut by these semi-pro criminals. They almost always have cutters sufficient to cut open a realtor-type lockbox hanging on a doorknob.

Remember, all you have to do is make it a little more difficult. They want to get in and out quickly! They are not wanting to spend any length of time getting into your house. So, get a little quickcrete and build a little concrete housing for a lockbox. It doesn’t have to be an expensive lockbox. The concrete will ensure that the intruder can’t cut it open. He can’t get the cutters around a lockbox that is set in concrete.

He could only get in if he knew the combination.

Tip #3

Do not buy any type of outdoor security equipment! It could delay the intruder’s big boat purchase.

Or, to not participate in his boat purchase, consider acquiring a simple piece of outside security equipment. Or more if your budget can handle more. This would further deter a person wanting to violate your family and your home.

SimCam Person Detection CameraRemember, the first tip (keeping outdoor lights on) will keep most of these butt heads at bay. But an added level of protection from an intruder ever even trying to enter your home is to have a couple of outdoor cameras. They don’t have to be the expensive ones, nor do you need a monthly contract with anyone.

There are great products that do have monthly fees, but especially when trying to do this on a budget, the DIY, affordable cameras with no monthly fees will
definitely do the job. (And shhhh! ….one possible nuance to this tip is to buy a couple of simulated or decoy cameras…. (you’ll also see many other cameras and lighting options at that link) It’s one more thing these scumbags don’t want to risk: being caught on camera)

Check out some of the reviews on smart floodlight cameras and spotlights that are both motion-activated that will send the fine fella running with one hand cupping his backside and the other trying to block the bright light that has suddenly blinded his sorry butt! Meanwhile, the onboard camera was activated just as the lights were by the motion detector and it is all crystal clear, in high resolution for you to review and/or to submit to the local authorities if needed. One thing is for sure, your home is no longer on his radar.

Tip #4

Get a dog, preferably at least a medium-size one who will bark when anyone approaches your home or yard. The same interviews with former burglars and intruders that confirmed that outside lights were a great deterrent, also indicated that a noisy and potentially threatening dog was also an item to help an intruder narrow down on the list of homes he may attempt to invade. Plus, dogs are just great anyway! No need to elaborate on this tip. I think we are already familiar with the benefits of having a watchdog.

By the way, those who are concerned with having cameras with motion detectors and a dog who might set it off, worry no more! Most of the systems we review are smart products that can distinguish between an animal and a human. See our reviews on The Best Indoor Security Cameras and the one on the SimCam AI Smart Cameras. These are great products that are reasonably priced.

Tips In the Event An Intruder Does Breach Your Walls

Since I believe we are all on the same page at this point and not wanting to buy this hardly-working gentleman a new boat, we’ll just continue in that vein. This second set of tips will help you to always be prepared in case a jerk-wad burglar does get into your home. Let’s be proactive!

Burglar with a Crowbar

Here are things TO DO to be prepared for the unfortunate event that a scum-sucking leach of a creature was to make it inside your home:

Tip #5

Buy at least a minimal do-it-yourself (DIY) indoor security system.

So, you forgot to turn on the outside lights before going out to dinner, and for whatever reason, this guy makes it inside. But thank the heavens above, you had invested in a minimal security system including sensors on doors and windows and a motion detector for the main part of the house.

All of the components are connected (usually wirelessly via WiFi, but wired is available too) to a 100dB alarm (or approx.) that will blare out bringing attention to your home and will also fill his pants with crab food. When that happens they do not look to grab anything except their own things (well, and in this case, his butt) to minimize any possible evidence left behind (Hopefully for him nothing leaks out! That would be DNA evidence that some sorry soul would have to evaluate in a lab downtown!)

Affordable Simplisafe Packages

Remember, he doesn’t want to do anything but get in and out, unseen and unheard. But now, he’s been heard. At least he will do nothing but assume so, and will likely be correct. Plus, he has soiled, black DUNGarees to wash, and a driver’s seat to disinfect! (Gag) He won’t wait to see how long it takes for the local authorities to show up on the scene.

Tip #6

Do not leave an alarm keypad in a place where a potential intruder can watch you disarm your alarm. And, yes, many of them do stake these things out.

One idea is to place a dummy keypad by the entry door and the real one in a less conspicuous place. You should always punch in some fake digits on the decoy pad before leaving or when entering the home. People put them by the main door because there are only a few seconds to arm or disarm a system before the alarm is triggered. But it’s plenty long enough to walk into a room or a spot not visible from a window.

Also, most systems will allow you to set the time to whatever works for you. So, walk in, punch in fake numbers on the artificial pad, go to “the bathroom” and turn your system off. Or, turn it off from your key fob if one came with your alarm system.

SimpliSafe Package Deals

Talk about a frustrated intruder (poor thing!) who thinks he is brilliant in cracking the code only to find the code he has ain’t it! (Always use the same wrong code on the fake pad to keep it all looking legit in case he’s watching)

One other piece of info to be aware of is that many intruders use a simple system to crack your code. The first digit on the keypad is always the dirtiest one, the second is second dirtiest, and so on. It isn’t a perfect system for them, but it has proven to be extremely effective. So, keep the real keypad clean. Wipe it down on a regular basis.

But if you are using a fake keypad too, never wipe the fake one down. He’s watched you and now the dirt accumulation makes him ready to do a victory lap for his own brilliance because what he deciphered you punching into the pad is also confirmed by his clever dark criminal knowledge.

But he tried, and he tried, and he tried, he can’t get no…..

He Can't Get No Satisfaction

…..cooperation with the flippin’ alarm. (A little shout out to                            Mick there!)

Time’s up!

Now, the only dirt accumulation he’s concerned about as the alarm blares in his ears is….. you got it: it’s the man-mud piling up in the back his fancy black, silky Fruit-of-the-Looms! Once again, cupped hand in back unsuccessfully trying to stop the leakage…. other hand trying to do everything else!

Poor fella! I know one house he won’t be trying to break into any time soon. Keep in mind, once an intruder has succeeded or attempted to break into your home, he is aware that you will be on the watch for a long time to come.

Tip #7

Don’t keep valuables in the Master Bedroom. Well, you may have to keep one or two, but keep the rest somewhere else. The first and usually only target room of an intruder is the Master Bedroom.

  • Keep valuable jewelry in an unlikely place, like the top of a closet in a toddler’s room. Still hidden of course, but they will not look there anyway.
  • Keep cash in another room. Some people use fake Coka-Cola or other soda can that has a compartment. Don’t put it in your mattress IN YOU ROOM!! How common is the term “mattress money”? Pretty common term. Everybody knows that one.
  • Anything of yours you don’t want a burglar to own, keep in another room.

He's Got the Goods

An intruder will typically go straightway to the Master Bedroom, search for jewelry and cash in the obvious places, including a safe and a large jewelry box. He sees a safe in the master closet, and it’s not bolted down. It’s heavy, but light enough to throw in his black bag and move on. Jackpot! Then he goes to the jewelry box and quickly sees a lot of shiny stuff. Cha-ching! He’s feeling good now.

“I’m almost out of here now. Hahaha!” (wicked laugh) “I bypassed their lame security, found the mother load as predicted, and I can get out quickly with these idiots PAYING me! I can pick the lock on this stupid safe once I am at my safe haven!” (he snickers at his own cheesy burglar humor)

Oh crud! What? He got the wrong stuff!!!

Disappoint Your Burglars

See, the real safe was bolted down in an inconspicuous place. The slime bucket intruder couldn’t have taken it! He took a decoy and never thought that there would be another. And all that jewelry he took? Same thing! It’s noting but fake stuff. It looks good at the moment and he swipes it up by the handful, but it’s virtually worthless. It’s jewelry that is probably casually wearable, but it’s not the real stuff. The real jewelry was in another room, not in a fancy jewelry box, but out of sight in a baby monitor box in the top of the closet in a baby’s room, or in the dryer, or maybe in a fake cheerios box in the pantry (just made a lot of that up because it’s easy to think of great places).

Really, not much else matters except that those valuables aren’t in the master bedroom nor in plain sight. And it’s a good idea to have a few shiny decoys like we just observed. Intruders want to get in and out. Let’s help them do just that!

While You Were Sleeping – General Tips

Keep your phone, wallet, purse, and keys on the nightstand right by where you sleep.

First, if someone were to get into your house at night, the last thing you want is for them to have access to your wallet, keys, and phone because you’ve formed a bad habit and have been leaving them on the kitchen counter or somewhere else in the house.

Second, when you wake up hearing those strange noises and you’re certain someone is inside, you immediately reach for your phone, but it isn’t there. That dude in black has it! “Oh wait! I’ll grab my keys and hit the panic button so my car alarm will go off. Crap! The keys were with my phone!” He plans to drive away in your car since he has so much of your stuff to get to his place. He’ll ditch the car before you have a chance to notify the authorities, and any cash you had will probably not be left in your mailbox. Also, he may get your identity and keep reeking havoc on you if that possibility doesn’t register with you in time. In fact, he could use your cards online stealthily immediately after leaving your house.

It’s just so much better to have those things by your bed and a couple of lights on outside.

ExpressVPN, the Best online Protection

Certainly, there are many facets to protecting a home, and some things work better than others. Nothing can be 100% guaranteed, but implementing the tips above have been proven over and over again to keep intruders out and your family safe. A simple light in the front and a light in the back may be all you ever need and it is a cheap place to start. Then a minimal DIY security system that can be very affordable will add another layer of protection and info gathering for authorities in the event a break-in occurs. Check out our SimpliSafe Alarm System Review or our Ring Security System Review.

Both SimpliSafe and Ring offer affordable DIY systems that cover all of the bases and are two of the top-rated home security companies on the market.

And lastly, just as most people are unable to go to bed without brushing their teeth or some other going-to-bed habits, establishing some sensible habits such as keeping your phone wallet and other related items by the bed will add another layer of protection and even an alarm if you have an automobile with panic mode.

I hope you found this article helpful. If you would drop us a note in the comment section below. We’d love to hear from you if you have any ideas, general feedback, or even products that you know of that may help readers as they build their home security. Thanks for reading! 🙂

Wireless Video Doorbell System – SimCam Ango Video Doorbell

SimCam AIloy 1S Outdoor Security Camera

ango doorbell

Some might say:

“the appearance of a wireless video doorbell system can deter most people that would come to your door with ill intent….”

And they would be right. These devices are not meant to be disguised or inconspicuous, but to both inform those with nefarious intentions that they have been tracked, and to do the actual tracking via video/photo!

The benefits of having a video doorbell system go beyond security…..

It can be convenient from time to time to know exactly who is at your door, and when- especially while you’re not home.

There is a range of different video doorbell systems out there, and they’ve existed for years. The old systems behaved more like an intercom that could ring a doorbell and take shotty videos.

The Systems available today are far more superior in their effectiveness, features, and video quality than ever before. The use of AI and the ability to record clear video in daytime or night conditions have made it more difficult for criminals to sneak up on anyone.

The SimCam Ango Doorbell is such a device assisted with AI technology and is what we’re going to be focusing on in this post.

The SimCam Ango Video Doorbell System

This particular device from SimCam has a large range of features to go through. However, there are particular selling points that users have pointed out.

Easy to Install

The first thing would be the ease of installation. After going through several reviews, the first thing mentioned is how easy of a time users had installing this on their door.

And notice that I said that the users installed the system. This unit is 100% do-it-yourself friendly— no need for any expensive professionals to show up and install.

Picture Quality

The second most common thing that is mentioned in reviews is how good the video looks. Most are very impressed with the FHD 1080p video and images either day or night.

A lot of people who took the time to write a review were replacing other brands of a similar product. They wrote how pleasantly surprised they were with the difference in picture quality with the SimCam over the replaced brand.

Answering the Door when You’re Not Home

This is a feature that a lot of people bring up. If someone comes to your door while you’re away, the app alerts you on your smartphone. The alert not only allows you to see who it is in real-time, but you can also conduct a conversation with whoever is at the door.

One person brought up a door to door salesman and letting them know that he wasn’t interested while he was miles away from home. You can also inform someone with ill intent that they’ve been recorded and the police are on their way. That can prevent the person or people from taking further action.

Without too much imagination, you can come up with several other reasons why this would be a handy feature.

Features of the SimCam Ango Video Doorbell

Price: Get the current price here!

Here is a list of features that you get with your doorbell cam.

  • FHD 1080p Video Quality
  • 140 Degree Field of View
  • Night Vision with 6 Infra-Red LEDs
  • Two-Way Talk
  • Local Storage up to 128 GB
  • Cloud Storage Support up to 28 Days (Optional with Subscription)
  • Person Detection – The AI will determine whether it’s a person at the door or other things like moving branches or traffic. False notifications are reduced through this feature.
  • 100 Foot Wi-Fi Range
  • Motion Activation
  • Tamper Alarm- Prevents someone from tampering with or stealing the doorbell.
  • Pre-Recorded Door Answering Message Option

Another thing that is worth mentioning is that this device can be powered by the rechargeable batteries and mounted to your door. Or, you can replace your existing doorbell, and use its wiring to hardwire the device beside your door.

The SimCam website boasts that the battery life is about 180 days, but I don’t think that is a realistic number. The reason is, there are so many variables that come into play to determine how long a battery will last.

Ultimately- how often is it going to get out of sleep mode and use up battery life? If you’re a business of some kind with customers coming and going, the battery would need to be swapped out for fully charged ones much sooner than a home with less traffic.

I bring this up because as nice as it is when the unit is fixed and centered on your door to get the best facial picture, it might not be the most practical for some situations. Hardwiring removes that from being an issue, but the easiest way to do that is to replace the existing doorbell. You’ll still get a shot of folks at the door, but not a dead-on headshot.

Conclusion – Wireless Video Doorbell System Peace of Mind

At the end of the day, peace of mind is the largest benefit of the SimCam Ango Video Doorbell. It is a layer of security that wards off the most forward approach of burglary, it is an affordable item, it is easy to install, and comes with some impressive features for the money.

Outdoor Security Camera System – SimCam Alloy 1S

Wouldn’t you like to know who’s coming up your driveway or entering your yard? An outdoor security camera system does this more efficiently than ever.

AI is populating just about every device out there, from complex tech down to a simple light bulb. Since AI is making a clean sweep, it’s time to check out a device where AI makes an incredible difference, and that’s in the arena of home outdoor security cameras. SimCam is taking the new technology seriously with its new SimCam Alloy 1S Outdoor Security Camera with AI.

Outdoor Security Camera System and AI

So, how is AI incorporated into a security camera system?Security Camreras With AI

AI (Artificial Intelligence), regarding a security system or camera, is a term used to quickly explain that it’s a system that can learn or be told to know what it’s looking at. It will know who’s at the door or walking up the driveway.

It also uses that distinction to determine whether it’s a stranger, and reason to sound the alarm, which is the important part about this technology being at use in security. Less false alarms and more legitimate threat detection is a plus.

SimCam Alloy 1S AI Outdoor Security Camera

The Alloy 1s is such a camera, that has a variety of abilities through the use of AI technology that a traditional security camera will never have. This system will alert you directly the moment it detects a threat, not after a threat has taken its liberty.

The alert mentioned above is done either via an app on your mobile device or through its 100-decibel siren. Let’s check out some of the features that are available with this security camera by SimCam, and see what else it has to offer.

SimCam Allot 1S Outdoor Security Camera

How it Works

Before installing the camera outdoors, install the SimCam mobile app to your mobile device, and follow instructions to sync the app with the camera.

(Don’t forget to install the SIM card.)

There isn’t a lot to set up and operation of this camera. Find a place outdoors that is within the Wi-Fi range of your server after you’ve synchronized the app.

This camera is AC powered, so keep that into consideration when picking a spot. You may want to install it in a place where you can run it through the wall or even through a window, and still be able to reach an outlet.

That’s all there is to it.

Facial Recognition Software

The software goes beyond just facial recognition. Through the app, you can load pictures of your pets as well, and recognizes your vehicles (it’ll also tell you whether your parked car has moved).

You can store up to 200 different recognition profiles by uploading four pics of each person you want to store. If someone you know decides to stop by, and you’ve previously had a profile done on them, you’ll be notified who’s been identified by your camera by name.

The same goes for pets, or your neighbor’s pets. This part of the feature is good to let you know if a stray or wild animal is entering the area or to inform you of who keeps leaving a mess in your front yard.

There is one thing that I’d like to add concerning the facial recognition side of this camera. It would be wise to mount the camera within one story’s worth of height. Any higher up than that and the camera will have a hard time seeing faces, and will instead see tops of heads and hats.

SimCam AI Security Camerap;

There are many more features that this little outdoor camera is equipped with. Not the least of which is the fact that there are no subscription fees or cumbersome power stations to have to worry about.

The reviews for the camera rate it in good standing, and for the price, you really can’t go wrong. Just shy of $100.00 makes this outdoor camera an affordable and easy to use security measure for any home.

SimpliSafe – August 2020 Private Sale!

SimpliSafe is having a Private Sale. AGAIN! It ends next Tuesday….

Ends September 1st, 2020!

20% OFF of your entire order AND a FREE SimpliCam (the coveted camera these days)

Free SimpliCam With Any Package

===>Click Here to go to SimpliSafe’s special site!<===

A Company On A Mission

This sale is  SimpliSafe’s MO! Except for their Christmas sale in 2019, 20% off is pretty good, and they’ve added a free SimpliCam, their state-of-the-art indoor home camera. It’s a deal for those looking for a steal.  Yep, they are giving away one of their famous $99 SimpliCam cameras with every security system purchased during this sale. The size of the package doesn’t matter. Once in awhile, there will be a security company that will offer a discount on products, but not like this.

But there is one thing that disappoints me with SimpliCam, one thing I just can’t understand More on that below…..

Why does SimpliSafe Do This?

But first, why did SimpliSafe crank up in the first place? Why are they giving deals that are unbeatable within the DIY Home Security arena?

Who Are These Masked Men? (Masked due to Covid-19 mandates of course!)

SimpliSafe was started by a couple of Harvard Business School students in 2006 as an answer to a need. Several friends of Chad and Eleanor Laurans had experienced break-ins and were unable to find a security company that was a fit for renters. This motivated Mr. Laurans to create a solution since there was none.

Harvard UniversityAs an electrical engineer who had graduated from Yale in 2000, Mr. Laurens had a jumpstart with the necessary skillset to start developing a line of DIY (Do-it-yourself) home security products that would cater to renters. From 2006-2008 Chad and Eleanor worked on the SimpliSafe concept in their home. The products were tested out at friends’ residences as the appearance and functionality were perfected for an official launch in 2009.

There was an initial investor who believed in the company, and two more consecutive funding companies who saw the quick growth and potential of SimpliSafe. The most recent investor took a controlling interest in the company and they have continued to grow. Grow? They’ve done that! That leads me to the one issue I have with SimpliSafe, but first, one last thing. Then onto my disappointment.

Why Offer Such Deals?

SimpliSafe was determined to make a difference in the world of home security. This venture wasn’t to be a quick fix, and the founders were not wanting to provide products that would take extreme sales tactics for them to remain in business. Their goal was to change the industry by creating and developing products that were in step with the times.

There are other home security companies that brag that they have been around since the 1800s. Well, some of them seem like they are still operating with that day’s technology in mind. Okay, being fair, they may have kept up for a while as the world changed, but they got locked into a mindset a few decades ago that wasn’t anticipating the needs and wants of a generation of homeowners who are all holding mobile phones and laptops.

So, being one of the pioneers of this new, DIY home security concept, SimpliSafe has been determined to continue to reinvest back into a new customer base as they prove themselves to be the innovators that they are. They want to win loyalty through honesty, great products and services, and reasonable prices. As they do so, they will be offering more and more products, filling the needs of customers as they become aware of them. Now I will share with you how they are letting me down……

Where Are the Cameras?

The one thing that disappoints me about SimpliSafe is its limited camera options. In fact, they only offer the SimpliCam for indoors, and the Video Doorbell Pro for outdoors. Video doorbells are not the same as other outdoor cameras. It’s impractical to put a doorbell camera in most places where one would want them. They are designed for that one spot, right by your door. Check out our reviews on home security cameras.

And don’t get me wrong, both of these cameras are exceptional and receive rave reviews for quality, durability, appearance, and great price. all of their products are great! But SimpliSafe would do well to add a couple of outdoor cameras and at least one more indoor option. Perhaps wired and battery operated. A floodlight camera for outdoors would be awesome too! This link will take you to one of our reviews on some outdoor security lights and smart lights.

The good news, if I’m understanding it right, is that they will be rolling out more camera options soon. I hope this is correct because most people want to have all of their components working together from the same manufacturer. It’s also good news to know that any cameras SimpliSafe puts out will be quality products just like everything else they’ve ever offered.

So, How Do I  Get 20% off and a free SimpliCam?

Using this link, go to SimpliSafe. You will automatically receive the discount. The discount is for anything you buy with the package. For instance, even if you get their least expensive package, you get the discount and free SimpliCam. If you decide to add a Video Doorbell Pro or Smart Lock, the discount is applied to those products as well.

SimpliSafe Foundation Package

<===== This package is called The Foundation. It’s the basic starter package and is insanely affordable! It doesn’t cost much more than the free SimpliCam if it were to be purchased. But you get the SimpliCam security camera for free and 35% off of your entire order, EVEN WITH THIS FOUNDATION PACKAGE! I don’t know how they do it.

Before You Go Shop At SimpliSafe……

To clear up any confusion based on a number of questions I’ve received, although the Video Doorbell Pro isn’t part of the pre-set packages, it is eligible for the 20% discount. You would just need to add it to whichever package you choose. The same goes for the Smart Lock.

SimpliSafe Sale – 4th of July DEALS!!

UPDATE!! Although the July 4th promotion is over, the prices at SimpliSafe are still the best in the industry and their products are state-of-the-art. Check out the links below to get updated pricing or a quote directly from SimpliSafe, or check out this review of a few of their products

Below is the sales post from last weekend:

30% OFF Of Everything at SimpliSafe Until Tuesday July 7th!!!

To go straight to the discount link, start here at SimpliSafe! For more info, keep reading……

In case you haven’t heard, SimpliSafe is taking off as the next big thing within the home security industry. And I should not stop with the home. There are countless small business owners and managers who have chosen SimpliSafe’s components to protect their businesses as well as their homes. So, right now, this SimpliSafe Sale is their way of saying “thanks” for the support and for all of the positive input regarding their products and services.

In this brief post, I just want to give you a “heads up” on the deal SimpliSafe is currently offering. Frankly, their website, though simple, can leave a few things unclear. I will clear those items for you that I encountered. But I’d rather a great product with a not-so-clear item or two on their website than a glorious web presence from a company who sucks, has poor customer service, elevated prices, or has a bad logo! (I guess that’s just me as a design guy)

So here we go with the SimpliSafe Sale for the week of July 4th, 2020 and ending on July 7th, 2020:

30% Off of Everything!!!

30% Off? That’s a pretty good product-wide contribution to the country. None of the equipment comes in red, white, and blue, but they are about helping during this difficult time in the world. Usually, there are certain products that are on sale, not everything. But, you’re probably thinking “there’s gotta be a freakin’ catch!”. Well, kinda, but not really. Read on and I’ll explain.

Now, I won’t say 30% off is the best deal they’ve had, but it’s close. And I don’t see how they’ve done the deals they’ve done before. Around Christmas (2019), lots of people I know were receiving offers for 50% off of everything from SimpliSafe!! That was a sweet deal, but that was probably a one-time (or season) deal as SimpliSafe was in a campaign to show the world they are a serious contender within the industry.

So, what about the freakin’ catch!? Okay, okay….

Here’s the Not-Really Catch

The offer is for a “security system”, not individual components. My take? They are upfront about the fact that it is a package discount, and that is reasonable. With SimpliSafe systems, there is a hub and a wireless keypad for it to operate, so those two items are completely necessary to have a system with them. The only other thing required for it to become a package is ONE sensor. Yep, one door or window sensor makes it a package. So, it’s not some deceptive way to get a person to buy a certain level of package, or to get some overpriced junk to receive deep discounts. These are the essential components that have given this company its great reputation.

30% OFF Plus, Plus

On top of the 30% discount, SimpliSafe will throw in a FREE SimpleCam! Have you heard of these? They are part of the success of SimpliSafe. These cameras will alert you via phone, tablet or computer anytime it detects motion. These cameras are also on the cutting edge of technology in that they minimize the false alarms associated with motion detectors. For instance, if one of your rats were to come out to look through the garbage, you don’t want to know about it on your phone. They’re not gonna haul off your smart TV or computer (Just remember to leave out more cheese so they won’t rummage so much).

One Complaint I Have About This SimpliSafe Sale

The sale is great, and they are upfront about all products being 30% off when purchasing a package, and the package can be as small as would make sense to buy. But I didn’t see the Doorbell Cams on the list of the items of any pre-set packages, nor was it on the options of the ones you build yourself. That kinda set me aback about the promotion because I want people to honestly know what to expect and not be fooled by some bait and switch marketing. I thought, “well, that really blows chunks!”, because most people I know or deal with really want a doorbell camera as part of their security system. (I sure like it!)

So, I called an executive with SimpliSafe and they let me know that as long as someone purchases a package, all other items with that purchase will be 30% off. That means everything! Just remember that when you go check out the deals. It won’t be clear as you look at each item, but as long as a package is purchased, the entire purchase is discounted by 30%.

Last But Not Least!!!

I know the yard signs aren’t expensive, but they do throw one of those in for free as well as a $99 SimpliCam! That really sweetens the deal to me. It’s hard to get “too many” cameras. There’s always one more spot I wish I had one.

So, the 30% off of any size package is reasonable, in fact generous. Adding on a SimpliCam makes it well into a bargain. And to know you can purchase a doorbell cam or any other product from SimpliSafe at 30% off is a great reason to take advantage of this SimpliSafe Sale for the 4th of July. And don’t forget, this sale goes until Tuesday, July 7, 2020.

You won’t see the discounts as you are making your order, but you will receive the 30% discount at checkout. Just click here to go to the SimpliSafe product listing or order form.

About the Nest Security Camera System

The DIY community interested in securing their homes have an array of things to think about. Cost, do-ability, capability, and needs, all gel together to help make decisions.

The Nest Security Camera System has thrown its hat into the ring, offering a range of different products to choose from with all of these factors in mind. To view the Nest cameras and other smart home products, click here.

About Nest

Google bought out Nest back in 2014 and has been the driving force behind the brand. Because of this, products produced by Nest coordinated with other smart products provided by Google. Now, all of Google Home products are manufactured under the Nest brand.

For Google smart product users, this is a great thing. But for those who think Google has overextended its reach into our lives, it can be a deterrent.

However, one can’t deny the convenience of having your lights, security system, various appliances, and other smart electronic home devices, centralized and more easily controlled through one company. Not only one company, but all of these can be controlled by one app, called “Nest App.”

Nest Security Camera System Run Through

As far as Nest’s security cameras go, they are more expensive than others out there, but there’s a good reason for that. They do not need a hub like other smart security cameras require. So, all of the thinking that a hub would do for other systems takes place within the camera.

All it needs to know is right there within the camera itself and communicates to your Wi-Fi system, and ultimately to your app. Because it’s doing more than other cameras in the sense that it doesn’t use a hub, more power is required.

Batteries would fail more rapidly, so these cameras need to be plugged into an outlet to operate. This is only an issue if there isn’t an outlet available nearby the area you want the camera focused upon.

So, if you’d rather not have a system that uses a hub, Nest is your choice so long as you can get past the outlet issue.

4 Security Cameras to Choose From

Nest Four Camera Options

There are four cameras to choose from, two being outdoor and two indoor.

  • Nest Cam Indoor Security Camera
  • Nest IQ Indoor
  • Nest Cam Outdoor Security Camera
  • Nest Cam IQ Outdoor Security Camera

The Nest Indoor Cameras

Nest Indoor CameraNest Cam IQ Indoor Camera

The two Nest indoor cameras differ in price, services, and in some ways quality. Otherwise, they operate similarly. You place them where it suits your needs the best, and plug it into an outlet.

Both cameras are 1080p, have night vision along with eight LED infra-red lights and motion sensors, wall mounts, and are 2-way communication ready. Setup and live streaming are very much the same between the two different cameras.

But the big difference between the two is that the IQ is equipped with a built-in Google Assistant. The quality of the internal components on the IQ is better as well, with things like a 4K sensor, 940nm infrared night vision, and daytime HDR.

The daytime HDR increases the quality of the picture that the IQ security camera can produce in regular daytime operation. The night vision being 940nm reduces glare, giving you a better and more precise picture of what’s crossing the field of view. There’s also a 12x digital zoom.

The standard camera has 24/7 streaming capabilities, alerting your app in real-time when something happens. The IQ sends out an alert, and also a snap-shot of what triggered the alert.

The IQ has a better alert system, that can distinguish when a person comes into frame called “Person Alerts.” This causes less false alerts coming to your phone or tablet.

The IQ indoor security camera does have more to offer than the more standard Nest camera and is priced accordingly in comparison.

The Nest Outdoor Cameras

Nest Cam Outdoor Camera

Nest Cam IQ Outdoor Camera

The outdoor cameras are very much like the indoor, with the biggest (and most obvious) difference being the weatherproof casing. Many of the specs and features (the internal works) are the same & will yield the same results.

The regular outdoor camera has a tough weatherproof exterior. This works fine for any weather or climate.

The IQ outdoor camera is weatherproof but is also tamper-proof. Nobody will be disabling this from afar or knocking it out of commission (all depending on how well you mount it).

The outdoor camera has one talk and listen speaker, and the IQ outdoor has three that are louder & are 15x more powerful than the standard version.

Nest Aware

Nest Aware is a subscription-based service that is offered with any Nest security camera. Nest aware gives your lower-priced Nest cameras many of the benefits that come with the IQ models, such as:

  • Cloud Storage
  • Facial Recognition Feature
  • Time Lapsed Video
  • Person Alerts

Pricing for Nest Aware differs according to how much data you’d like to have stored. If you want to save your video history up to ten days, it costs $10.00 per month for one camera, $5.00 a month for each additional camera.

To store 30 days’ worth of video history, it’ll cost you $30.00 per month for one camera, $15.00 per month for each additional camera. You can purchase this service yearly, which will grant discounts for one or multiple cameras.

All that said, you don’t have to purchase a subscription to Nest Aware to use your security cameras. Everything you’ll need to operate your cameras will be done through the Nest app.

That said, if you can’t afford the IQ cameras now, you could buy the cheaper priced camera and get many of the same benefits through this subscription. It’s an interesting plan that they offer and opens up opportunities that might otherwise be closed due to expense. To see current pricing on the Nest cameras and to view other smart home and security options, click here.

If you’re into turning your house into a smart home, and already use the various smart products that Google has to offer, these cameras will be the perfect addition to your smart system. They’re easy to use, efficient, and are easy on the do-it-yourselfer.

There are cheaper cameras out there, but few will boast the results that these will yield in picture quality. Some might think not having to worry about where to place the hub is a feature all of its own.
